Washington's streets were designed by a French architect Pierre L'Enfant. The Capitol Building is the city’s central point. From this centre the city has been divided into four sections: North-West, North-East, South-West, and South-East. The capital is also the point from which the city’s streets are numbered or lettered. The streets east and west of the Capitol are numbered or lettered. The streets east and west of the Capitol are numbered as the 1st street, 2nd street, and so on. The streets to the north and to the south are named for letters of the alphabet – G Street, K Street, etc. Besides, there are some avenues named after the original thirteen American states.
