Ductility. A ductile metal is one that can be easily drawn into a rod or a wire. A metals ductility is determined by the amount it will stretch,lengthwise,before it becomes brittle and fails. For a metal to be ductile, the molecules must have a great attraction for each other after the yield point(see definition later in this chapter) has been passed. As the molecules have a greater attraction for each other when cold,metals will be more ductile when cold. This is why wires and rods for the welding industry are drawn in the cold state.
